FrontierSpace

Welcome to the FrontierSpace roleplaying game. Inspired by our favorite science fiction RPGs of the distant and recent past, DwD Studios has build an entire new game on the foundation of the d00lite system to help you tell your star faring tales of daring sci-fi adventures. Although there are some developments in the game system to suit the needs of a space themed RPG, under the hood the engine purrs with the simplicity of the d00lite system that's become familiar and comfortable to so many. We are really proud of this, and hope you enjoy it too!

Although we wanted to make this whole game fit in one book, we were really unhappy with the small font, tight spacing, small margins, and sparse artwork. We think you would have been bothered by all that too. We really wanted it to be easy to read and well organized. Also, sci fi is one of our favorite themes and so we wanted to fill the game with the type of inspiring artwork that made us love so many of these kinds of games in our youth. So we split the game up into a Player's and Referee's Handbooks... and once you flip through them you'll understand! Besides... for the cover art we commissioned a single large spread laid out to support a two-book split. Put the books next to one another and you'll see the whole piece Eric Quigley did for us. It's beautiful!

Player's Handbook

Player's HandbookThis is the essential source book for all players. It contains all you need to know to make and develop your character, build his skills and abilities, and a large array of tech for him to use to build his legend in the frontier. Inside you'll find:

  • The Basics - six pages describing all you really need to know, as player, how to play the game.
  • Five Species - The insect-like Erakai, The genetically-engineerd Novim, the extreme Yar, and the intrepid Human. If that's not enough, play a Robot!
  • Six Abilities - Strength, Agility, Coordination, Perception, Intelligence, and Willpower.
  • Twelve Skills - Academic, Artist, Commander, Diplomat, Explorer, Marksman, Medic, Pilot, Scientist, Technician, Thief, and Warrior.
  • Benefits - a new system to help players customize their characters as they develop their skills. Benefits can open role-playing doors for your character or team, or can give your character an edge when the blasters come out. They help give commanders the ability to enact plans, warriors the ability to develop specific fighting styles, and more!
  • Destiny - Player Characters are a cut above the common fray of the frontier and are destined for greater things. Destiny is a way to help your character stay alive and succeed against adversity in a dangerous frontier.
  • Technology - Defensive projection screens, various types of body armor, communications gear, tools of the trade, questionable gear, exploration gear, hand-held scanners, cybernetic implants, and all the pistols, rifles, melee weapons, explosives, and heavy weapons you need. Add to that thirteen primary robot types, twenty three standard vehicles and thirteen stock model starships. The bulk of this book is equipment!
  • FrontierSpace Setting - We know many of you will create your own setting, but we've included a default one where we did a lot of the work for you, complete with a brief timeline and beautiful map with several political regions and interesting anomalies to explore.
  • Archetypes - Twenty pre-generated characters for you to use at the table or to serve as examples of the fun types of characters you might make. Great when someone pops over during a game or your Referee needs details of a quick NPC!
  • Player Sheets - Players will be happy with all the organized sheets designed to help them keep track of their character and its stuff. Robot sheet, Vehicle sheet, Starship sheet, and Character sheet.
  • Fully Indexed - We love a good index, and we hope you do too!

Referee's Handbook

Referee's HandbookThis is the essential source book for all game masters. It contains all you need to know to design campaigns and missions for your players, give them obstacles to overcome and rewards to reap. This thing is just full of usable tools for the busy Referee. Inside you'll find:

  • Development Points - all the guidelines you need to hand out development points to your players to develop their characters, along with suggestions on how they might earn loyalty benefits from their patron organizations they work for.
  • Psionics - didn't put it in the Player's Handbook because we weren't sure everyone would want psions in their games. But there are three additional skills (psychometabolism, telekinesis, telepathy) giving characters access to a host of mental abilities. Use this system to replicate your favorite genre of mental powers in science fiction - or don't let it exist in your game at all! Including several pieces of psion-related equipment.
  • Making NPCs - rules for making minor and major non-player characters to fill the background of your setting or the major allies and adversaries for the players to interact.
  • Action & Adventure - all the guidelines you need to arbitrate the many situations that might come up in the game. Rather than exhaustive lists of modifiers and rules, the game takes a lite approach familiar to those who have enjoyed BareBones Fantasy and Covert Ops! Including action checks, resistance checks, conditions, many ways of getting hurt or healed, toxins and breaking and repairing things, lifting heavy weights, movement, planetary and space travel, security systems, and how all these things affect robots!
  • Combat - guidelines on how to run personal combat, vehicle combat, and spaceship combat to make the frontier a fun place to conduct amazing tales of action and adventure.
  • Lots of d00 Tables - fun tables to roll on to make specific model firearms, robots, vehicles, and star ships of various ages and conditions. These help make the frontier feel used, or provide an interesting aspect to gear the players might otherwise take for granted.
  • Cutting Edge Tech - so you want cloaking devices, transporters, jump gates, and nano robots? Want freeze rays and... ahem... plasma swords? Plenty of extra technology that fits in sci fi but didn't fit in the default frontier setting is included in this book for you to customize your own settings.
  • Base of Operations - when the players have earned a name for themselves, let them build a base of operations... from a science research station on a moon to a fortress on a distant world.
  • Aliens - the Player's Handbook comes with a handful of player character aliens, but come on... that can't be all there is, right? Use the systems in this book to create new alien life forms, from creatures to sapient beings. Heck - you could work with your players to let them build their own aliens to play. Includes many fully defined example creatures, and five fully fleshed out sapient alien species which could serve as player character options if you'd like.
  • Adventure Prep Tools - those who have enjoyed BareBones Fantasy and Covert Ops will like the many tools we've provided you to help you prep for adventures. It includes a mission generator, an installation generator for when you need to flesh out that corporate base or enemy military fortress, a master villain generator to give players someone to hate, and more!
  • Space Generation Tools - want to create your own setting? Rules and guides herein allow you to generate sectors of space with stars and trade routes and nebulae, populated by various species. Also included is a star system generator to flesh out each system with stars and planets and moons and asteroids and lots more. Then we've added a planetary generator to give the players new worlds to explore.
  • Referee Sheets! - why should the players get all the good sheets? Included is a session wrap-up sheet to help you track the player's impact on your setting, a single-page major NPC sheet for your villains and henchmen, a creature sheet, new species sheet, mission generation worksheet, master villain sheet, star sector sheet complete with hex grid, a star system tracking sheet, and a planet tracking sheet. Everything you need to use all the systems in this book.
  • Fully Indexed - did we mention we love indexes?
