"Weapon Damage is determined by weapon type. For each 5 points of STR above 55 gain +1 to melee damage (62 STR causes +1 damage, for instance)."
Shouldn't a 62 STR cause +2 damage? Because of rounding in favore of character.
BareBones Fantasy RPG is not associated with Skaldcrow Games' Bare Bones Multiverse, despite similar names. Check out Glenn's products by clicking here.
That sounds right to me, but I'm not who you're asking. I don't have the book in front of me but if that is the way it's written I would say you are correct.
Perhaps the wording is a little misleading, we might have said, "For each full 5 points of STR above 55 gain +1." There is an example as you pointed out.
(62 STR causes +1 damage, for instance)
:-)
Or just throw in a fancy "(Rounding down)" at the end of it.
I think the wording is clear and needs no correction. It's a requirement for acquisition, not a fraction. You haven't divided anything. No rounding is needed. You are qualifying "For every 5 points above."
On p.5, the Rulebook clearly states:
I'd definitely recommend making it more clear. My assumption was that you round in the character's favor when it's somewhat ambiguous (like at .5) and the 62 rounded off because it was less than half. I've been doing it that 62 would not, but 63 would give another point of damage, for instance.
What's ambiguous about it? If it's 6.1, you round up to 7. The rule doesn't say "when it's ambiguous". That would be ambiguous. "All calculations that result in fractions" is entirely unambiguous.
However, maybe it's the long phrasing and short attention spans. In my Steamroller™ rules, I use the phrase "Round all fractions in favor of the character." Certainly can't be even mistaken ambiguity about that.
First thing's first, I for one don't appreciate the tone of your comment. Your post is bordering on insulting, and that's not productive. This is merely a miscommunication that people are trying to resolve. If your goal is to encourage people play this game and communicate on these boards, that's not the way to get it. No one likes being insulted, backhanded or otherwise.
Adding an amount, is a calculation, thus the confusion.
Sorry. The short attention spans comment was a bit harsh. I was feeling antsy last night. PTSD makes me a bit reactionary when I don't even realize I'm feeling it. I don't normally think that way.
I think I know where the confusion is. The idea of the "rounding up" is mainly focused around when you are looking up things like BP or other things where dividing gets involved. For instance, when you are looking up BP you divide strength in half but what happens when you divide a Strength score of 57? Well you get a fraction (or a decimal). In that case you would round in favor of the player.
HOWEVER, having a Strength score of 57 does NOT give you a +1 to Melee attack because it is not "five points over 55 Strength", that requirement is not met in this case.
Clear?
Can someone post in the Q&A so we can give an answer. Thanks!
