Most of you know I'm a huge fan of espionage and spy action and adventure. I consider Covert Ops my "baby" but it's not my only interest.
Most of you also know I'm a huge fan of the d00lite system we've built. I love how easy it is to use, how flexible it is, and how well it represents the genre. The simplicity and surprising tactical usefulness of the multi-action penalty... the way crits are handled... professions as skills... the whole thing. Love it. But it's not my only interest.
I am also a huge OSR fan and supporter. Being a creature of the 80's doesn't only mean I've rocked parachute pants and a mullet (but sadly I did). It also means I played early editions of D&D. A lot. There is something nostalgic and fun about it which I've never quite let go of.
So I wanted to share a project I've been working on. It's called White Lies. It's an OSR product in the vein of White Star (a great incarnation of those old school rules in a sci fi venue). It embraces a lot of the core concepts of Covert Ops. In fact, some of the research and hard work put into some of the systems and subsystems of Covert Ops has made its way into this book as well. Why re-invent the wheel, right?
But if you've been on the fence about trying Covert Ops and want to give White Lies a try, it'll be released on November 6th (same day as the new Bond flick Spectre, which I'm excited to see by the way, Daniel Craig is fantastic). It's a class & level game akin to D&D using the Swords & Wizardry WhiteBox standards and the OGL (not our usual licensing; we normally prefer Creative Commons... but when in Rome...)
Some of you might say "what?! another game that isn't [insert whichever game you're waiting on here] ?!" and to that I can only apologize. I got on a development kick and saw it through to its completion. I want to assure you that I did not abandoning anything. Still love and prefer Covert Ops. Still love and prefer BBF. Still love and prefer d00lite. Not selling out to the OSR crowd. I guess I just suffer from game developer ADD or something. I love community supported projects and that's one community that really works together on things. I saw an opportunity to provide support to a community which lacked an espionage/spy RPG offering and wanted to capture the hearts of those in that community with like minds.
Anyway - wanted to give folks a heads up. After its release, when products are developed for one, I hope to release the same product developed and adapted for the other as well.
If you're someone who likes OSR products I hope you pick up White Lies and give it a try. For those who prefer the d00lite Covert Ops I hope you pick that up and enjoy it. If you already have one and want the other - thank you for the support. And anyone who wants to tie me to my computer in my office and surround me with shiny sci fi things to try to get my mind back in the game, I hear ya!
Thanks for reading!
