Creating One-Sheet Adventures

PostDateIcon Thu, 02/02/2012 - 12:30pm | PostAuthorIcon Bill Logan

First there was Maidens of Moordoth, then Trouble at Karam's Claim. Adventure modules without a specified setting for Labyrinth Lord (or any other old-school fantasy retro-clone or original!). I wrote these because I had a story to tell, and assumed I'd have all kinds of ideas and be able to craft more and more of these one-sheet adventures.

It turns out that coming up with quality one-sheet adventures isn't all that easy. I've received a lot of emails asking when the next one will be out, and I'm excited to say: soon! I finally have another story to tell and I'm putting it together.

Quote from my recent google+ post:
Working on new one-sheet adventure: The Eye of Olgeron. Hope it's as popular as the first two! Elements of this one: map of a sunken pyramid, a lost civilization whose story is revealed throughout, a mysterious curse brought on by vengeance and pride, a puzzle with clues given through riddle and poem... and... um... oh yeah, it all starts in a tavern!

Now don't get me wrong... I could have whipped up a dungeon and thrown in some reason the PCs come across it or whatever. But come on - how fun would that be? I've seen a lot of one-sheet adventures out there and they're always so sketchy. Maybe intentionally so, but sketchy. They don't often tell a story, just provide a quick map and encounter areas (side thought: maybe sometimes that's all we need as DMs to get our creative juices flowing?).

Those of you who have already picked up copies of these first two know that it's a matter of my pride... I want to make the one-sheet adventures tell a full story. Heck, if I flesh each out and didn't use such a tiny little font they might have each been stand-alone larger adventure modules. But that's not the point of these one-sheets. Nor is profit... have you noticed I sell them for 50 cents apiece? Yeah... not earning a whole lot of money off them.

So keep the emails coming. I enjoy hearing how your sessions went, and like the criticism as well. I'm hoping to build a large array of these one-sheet adventures over time, but the answer to the most common email I get ("when will the next one-sheet be done?") is this: as soon as I'm inspired to write one! :-)

If you want to write a one-sheet and have a story to tell, drop me an email and tell me about it! We at DwD Studios can do the layout work, the play testing, the map making, etc. I look forward to hearing from you.
