Hello All,
I noticed that in the game that there is no real guidance on how far one can jump without using Lighter than Air. I did some digging and its suggested on the Bare Bones forums that normal humans have a jump of 1 or 2 MOV. So after some thought, here is what I’ve decided.
Unless otherwise noted, like handicapped or frail, everyone has 2 MOV jump. All PC’s and most NPCs (Major and Minor) will have 4 MOV jump as an Action but no further movement. Also it doesn’t matter if Internal or External. This simulates many if the movies I’ve seen where protagonists can leap over walls and up on roofs and trees. This ability doesn’t need QI to use. And it doesn’t stack with Lighter than Air.
I’d love any feedback on it.
Thanks!
Ok, feedback. First, this is your game and you can do what you want to make it more fun for you and your players.
Jumping, here is how I do it.
Standing jump 1 space, running jump 2 spaces. All as part of movement. If there is danger or other mitigating circumstances I'll call for a DEX (page 7) roll to succeed. A DEX roll with a hard penalty can increase those distances by 1 space.
I'm not sure what Lighter than Air is. Perhaps Lightness? If so, your description of "This simulates many if the movies I’ve seen where protagonists can leap over walls and up on roofs and trees." is the very definition of Lightness in Art of Wuxia. Many such movies will compliment such a leap with a comment such as, "I see you've been training in lightness/Qinggong". But it does require training. It is first more easily learned by practitioners of internal styles but can certainly be mastered by those more experienced external style martial artists.
If you feel all characters and important NPCs should have lightness just move Lightness from the Internal Qi section and exchanging it with Draw Upon Qi in the general Qi section. Or just change it up however you see fit.
I hope this is helpful.
Thanks for the reply Jasales! You were right, I was thinking of Lightness not Lighter than Air. What I wanted to do is allow even External users to be able to leap from roof to ground or ground to roof. However, I didn’t feel right about stepping in on Internal Lightness ability. I ran a one-shot the other weekend and the players had a blast. And this seemed to work out fine for the players.
Here is to hoping they want more. If you have the players create characters together they should have a great time with the second page of the character sheet to help them flesh out their connections to each other and the world. Lots of material for the GM to mine there!
Hope this helps!
